American Leadership Forum

In 2008 I was invited to be in Class XII of the Mountain Valley Chapter of the American Leadership Forum (ALF.)  ALF is a national organization that builds community among corporate, non-profit and civic leaders.  For a year, we met monthly to get to know one another and discuss issues of leadership.  In the summer, we went on an intense 6 day wilderness experience.  A blog report with lots of pictures is HERE.

Teaching in NYC with Geshe Roach and Lama McNally

In April, 2008 I participated in a series of teachings in NYC with two Tibetan Buddhist Lamas with whom I had an interfaith relationship,  Geshe Roach and Lama Christie.   They were launching their book titled The Eastern Path to Heaven. The book uses Christian scripture to introduce concepts of karma and emptiness.  They had originally arranged to have the talks with Thomas Keating.  About a month before the talks were scheduled, they found out that Thomas, as a matter of policy, doesn’t speak at book launches.  They had already set everything up, including publicity.  They asked me if I could, on short notice, do the talks with them.  I accepted.  The talks were to take place in four parts.  We were each to answer the questions:
1) what’s the problem – the human condition (talk 1)
2) what’s the goal – heaven (talk 2)
3) how do we get there in this lifetime (talks 3 & 4).

Sand Mandala

In December, 2007, Trinity Cathedral hosted Tibetan Buddhist monks who created a Sand Mandala in our East Transcept.  The monk participated in our Sunday liturgies.  About 5000 people came through the Cathedral. My blog reports are HERE.

An Almost Holy Picture at the National Cathedral in 2005

In 2003 I performed Heather McDonald’s one person play An Almost Holy Picture as part of my sabbatical.  It is a very moving play about an Episcopal Priest who leaves the priesthood because of a crisiss of faith.  The play was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and performed by Kevin Bacon on Broadway.  I didn’t have any significant acting experience but some friends talked me into doing it.  Artistically I know it wasn’t fantastic, but it was quite an accomplishment.  Then two years later I was invited to do a production of it at the National Cathedral in collaboration with the author.  This was going to be a one-night gig with practically no staging.  So I re-memorized the play.  It was an amazing experience.  Here’s the first of four parts of the play:

  1. Brian,

Just a reminder about the Peace Corps talk at Trinity Lutheran Church down the street by Gayann and Marvin Kirschmer. Marvin served in Micronesia and Gayann in Bolivia in the late 1960’s. You wanted to announce this Sunday the 7th of June to all services. Thanks!

  2. Hi, Brian,
Ecstatic about the news! Thanks for keeping us posted. If there is still time to pick me up one of those “Send Me” t-shirts, I would absolutely LOVE it. (Size: med or small, if they don’t look teeny weeny.)
